What Makes Us Different
Epic Money Matters & Beyond stands apart because we believe financial literacy should be experienced, not just explained. Our program is built on hands‑on, real‑world learning where students actively practice the skills they need to navigate the financial world, not just read about them.
We intentionally prioritize pen‑and‑paper learning before introducing technology. Students today spend countless hours on screens, and research shows that writing by hand strengthens memory, comprehension, and long‑term skill retention. By slowing down and engaging with the material physically, students build deeper understanding and stronger financial habits.
Our approach is practical, relatable, and grounded in real life. Students learn by doing — budgeting with real numbers, analyzing paychecks, comparing financial choices, and reflecting on their values. This method helps them build confidence, agency, and the ability to make wise decisions in the world they’re growing into.
What Is Agency and Why It Matters Today
Agency is the ability for students to understand their choices, make informed decisions, and take meaningful action in their own lives. It’s the confidence to say, “I can do this,” paired with the skills to actually follow through. Agency is not just knowledge — it’s ownership, responsibility, and the belief that your decisions shape your future.
In today’s world, teaching agency is more important than ever. Students are growing up in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment filled with constant information, digital distractions, and financial decisions they’re expected to make earlier than previous generations. Without agency, young people can feel overwhelmed, passive, or dependent on others to guide their choices.
At Epic Money Matters & Beyond, we teach agency through hands‑on, real‑world practice. This approach helps them build the confidence and independence they need to navigate the financial world with clarity and purpose.
Agency empowers students to:
think critically
make wise, values‑driven decisions
advocate for
themselves
take responsibility for their financial future
build long‑term stability and confidence
When students develop agency, they don’t just learn financial skills — they learn how to trust themselves, take action, and create the life they want.

Why I Started Epic Money Matters & Beyond
If you had asked me in eighth grade what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have answered without hesitation: an accountant.
Growing up as the daughter of hardworking Mexican immigrant parents, I learned early that money was something you worked hard for but it wasn't something anyone formally taught us. There wasn't a roadmap for budgeting, building credit, investing, buying a home, or planning for the future.
As the first person in my family to attend college, I often found myself navigating financial decisions on my own. By age 16, I was preparing my own tax returns because I wanted to understand how money worked. During high school, I helped my parents create household budgets and pay bills. Looking back, those everyday experiences became my first financial education.
Like many people, I learned through trial and error. I celebrated financial wins, made mistakes, and discovered that financial literacy isn't about being perfect, it's about learning, adapting, and making better decisions over time.
One dream I held from a young age was owning property. I believed homeownership was a path to stability and building wealth, but when I shared that dream, my parents worried it was too risky. Their advice came from love and their own life experiences. It helped me realize that many families make financial decisions based on what they've experienced, not necessarily on what they were taught.
That realization stayed with me throughout my career.
As I worked in leadership, education, public service, and community-focused organizations, I met countless bright, capable young people who were preparing for adulthood but had never been taught practical life skills like budgeting, filing taxes, understanding credit, comparing college costs, or avoiding financial scams.
I kept asking myself one question: What if every student learned these skills before graduating?
That question became the foundation of Epic Money Matters & Beyond.
I created this organization because I believe financial education should be practical, engaging, culturally relevant, and accessible to every student. Learning about money shouldn't feel intimidating, it should build confidence, create opportunities, and empower young people to make informed decisions throughout their lives.
Financial literacy is about far more than balancing a budget. It's about creating choices. It opens doors to higher education, entrepreneurship, homeownership, financial independence, and the confidence to build a future that reflects your goals, not your circumstances.
My hope is that every student who participates in Epic Money Matters & Beyond leaves with more than financial knowledge. I want them to leave believing they have the confidence, skills, and ability to create the future they envision.
Because every student deserves more than a diploma. They deserve the financial confidence to build the life they dream of.
The Story That Inspired Me
My Mother's Story: The Lessons That Money Could Never Teach
Some of the most important lessons I learned about money didn't come from a classroom, they came from watching my mom.
My mother grew up in a small town in Jalisco, Mexico, and immigrated to the United States at just 14 years old. She arrived with very little, but she brought something far more valuable: determination. While still in high school, she worked after school and on weekends as a cashier at a department store. After graduation, she began her banking career as a file clerk at Home Federal and, through years of hard work and perseverance, advanced from an entry-level commercial real estate loan processor to the highest level of Senior Commercial Real Estate Loan Processor.
She had earned every success.
As a child, I watched my parents enjoy what looked like the American Dream. We moved into an upper middle-class neighborhood, drove beautiful cars, shopped at nice stores, dined at elegant restaurants, and took memorable vacations. I thought that was simply how life worked.
As an adult, I realized there was more to the story.
Although my parents had achieved financial success, we were often living beyond our means. Looking back, I understand that this wasn't about a lack of intelligence, it was about the psychology of money. After growing up with scarcity, financial success brought opportunities she had never imagined, but there were no mentors, no financial roadmap, and no one teaching how to balance enjoying success with building long-term wealth.
That realization changed the way I think about financial education.
I learned that money isn't just about numbers. It's about our experiences, beliefs, emotions, and the stories we inherit. We all have a "money story," and those stories influence how we earn, spend, save, invest, and plan for the future.
Watching my mother's journey taught me that financial literacy is about much more than budgets and bank accounts. It's about helping people understand their relationship with money so they can make confident, informed decisions that create lasting financial stability.
Today, my mother enjoys a peaceful retirement and is grateful for the life she built through perseverance and sacrifice. Her journey reminds me that the greatest financial legacy we can pass to the next generation isn't simply wealth—it's wisdom.
That lesson is woven into everything we do at Epic Money Matters & Beyond. We don't just teach financial skills; we help young people build healthy financial mindsets, develop confidence, and create a future grounded in knowledge, purpose, and opportunity.
